BBC Radio Suffolk show

Our task was to come up with a 15 minute BBC Suffolk type show.

Research.

BBC Suffolk catures for he older generation. Shows include drive time, news and weather, chat ect.

Dave and Sue
Dave and Sue are two fictional radio listeners created as marketing persons. Descriptions of the characters, created by the BBC, are given to all their local radio presenters as representative target listeners.
The characters were created as part of "Project Bullseye". Its stated aim was that "To develop great radio programming ... we need to know where the center of our audience target is and be able to focus on it in all we do. Dave and Sue are both 55. Sue is a school sectary, while Dave is a self employed plumber. They are both divorcees with grown-up children. The characters shop at Asda and wear casual clothes. The couple have little interest in high culture or politics and see the world as "a dangerous and depressing place". They hope that radio will be "something that will cheer them up and make them laugh.

The BBC also produced photographs of the couple, to encourage presenters to visualise their potential listeners.

Target Audience.

Rough guide.

10:00: build me up buttercup- The foundations.

10:02: into to show, whats coming up ect.

10:04: News and weather with Stewart Hilput.

10:08: short chat on christmas, with texts in.

10:10: feature with Luciana, on the nature preserve.

10:14: ending the show.

I feel that the content in my show is appropriate for the type of audience i am aiming for.

Asda Radio

Asda Radio, formally known as Asdafm was launched on September 7th 1991. Its a mix of adverts, jingles and songs played throughout the day as well as online.

Our task was to make our own Asda Radio show to be run for 15 minutes. I decided to use a combination off all three adverts, songs and jingles. I also chose to work around a Christmas theme due to the time of year.

My rough guide.

3 x Adverts for instore products.
- '2 for 1 offers on all Asda own brand products this Christmas'
-

2 x Christmas songs: Mariah Carey- All i want for Christmas

5 x Christmas jingles.

I also chose to use Asdas own Christmas jingles as well as a mix of my own to give it a more professional sound. The songs i chose to use where also both Christmas songs, this is because i thought it would be good to keep with the Christmas theme.

Editing the show

To edit all off our Radio shows together we had the choice to use either Sound booth or Logic Pro. I decided to use Logic pro as this is the industry standard editing program. there are two main tool used when using simple editing, the scissor tool and the volume/levels tool.

The scissor tool.

I started off by dragging all my sound files onto a new file. Becuase all the Christmas jingles were on one long sound file, i had to cut each jingle down using the scissor tool. This is simple done by right clicking the mouse and selecting the scissor tool, then left clicking where abouts you would like to cut the file. To delete a certain part off the file, you simply highlight it and push the backspace button.

Volume levels.
After cutting down the jingles I chose one to play under all the adverts for instore products throughout the 15 minute air time, i done this so the customer would recognize the jingle with the advert. This was done by simply creating two different sound waves on the same file. I then dragged the jingle onto one sound wave and the advert nto the other, so when i pushed play, they would both be played at the same time. Then using the volume and levels i was able to change the volume of the jingle, so that when the advert came on it could be heard over the top of the jingle.. then when the edvert finished i changed the levels again to the jingle would be played at full volume until it finished and then next one would be played.

The final outcome.

After cutting down all the jingles, adverts and songs to the correct length i put them all together in the order i wanted them to be played. Then using the volume levels i was able to ensure the adverts could be heard over the top of the jingles when played.

Im very pleased with how my Asda radio show turned out, i feel that if this was to be played on Asdafm there would be no problems. The use of fading and volume levels ensures that the show runs through smoothly.

although i feel i could of maybe included a few more adverts if i was to do this again in the future.

30 min live show

For our live show we were put into groups of 3 and asked to come up with a full 30minuite radio show to be recorded as live. We done some basic research on how radio shows are structured, what sort of features they involve, they type of music ect.

We have based our radio show on Radio one, following this we done alot of research on the type of audience that listen to BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1 extra. We decided that our target audience would be students between the ages of 15-25. We chose this as our target audience as this is the age range that has more free time and disposable income then any other, there for would more then likely listen to the radio then people of a different age range. Therefor we done some research into what this age range was interested in, such as: Fashion, going out, in higher education of some sort (uni or collage), into technology such as mobile phones, internet, credit cards ect, events and many more.

We came up with the following rough guide on how we were going to lay out our 30 minute show and what the content would be, at all times keeping this in mind..
'Remember: the audience is at the heart of everything we do'

Our outline show.

10:00
-jingles:
2mins opening- what is coming up (overall summery), who’s presenting ect.
-music: Beyonce- Halo

10:05

Intro to Ayo

- pre recorded interview: 5 mins- With Ayo on his experience of violence.
Text in
Sanitgold- the creator

10:10 Interview with Sophie miller about the theater.

10:15
Introduce;
Live music- George- hey ya acoustic.

Sports with Ayo

Lil Wayne- A millie

2mins closing- whats coming up on the next show, saying bye ect.

We decided to use chart based music as our target audience are more likely to be going out to bars/clubs and listening to chart music then any other. We did not feel it appropriate to play music such as heavy metal, folk or classical as the percentage of people in our age range do not listen to these genres, therefor would be put off by our show. Although, we do wish to cater to a wide range of people, and this has been shown in our music choice, going from pop, to live acoustic to R&B.

Our live recording.

We recorded our Radio show live on Tuesday December 8th. I found that although we had our rough guide to help us with timings it was alot harder to keep to these. As a result we ended up losing our words a little and having to fill time up with conversation that did not fit in with our radio show and also because we had to make up a few minutes of conversation on the spot, there was alot of silent pauses which made the show seem Un-professional.
Another slip up we had was in the last 5 minutes of the show, There was lots of background noise of rustling paper which can be heard extremely well. Because of this, there is again at least a whole minute of silence where we were not sure on what to do. Again, making the show seem un-professional.

Next time.
If we were able to go back and do this again there are a few things i would change to improve the end result of the show.
Firstly i would write out a script, and test run it to give us a rough idea of how much time would be taken up on each feature and secondly i would write an extra feature or two as back up in case something went wrong and we couldnt use of off the planned ones, or for some reason we found our selves with empty air time. This could be then kept in front off us and the show would run alot more smoothly as we would not find our selves with lots of pauses and gaps.
